About Us

With more of us spending time at home, some now even calling it our permanent place of work, it’s important it reflects our needs and is a place we’re happy to be in.  That’s how Jemelma Designs began.  I wanted to get more organised to cope with the home-schooling, two young kids and a husband who used to work in the big smoke and was now taking up permanent residency in the dining room!  I needed to create a working and living space to reflect all our needs –  that was when I started to focus on storage solutions and adapting the house to be more ‘user friendly’.

However, we’d just finished a major redecoration project throughout the entire ground floor so I was reluctant to it looking like an office and school with a creche attached.  It needed to be a good looking, homely house.  After all, I’d spent loads on home magazine subscriptions and torn out several hundred pages for a mood board (that never turned out to be big enough to house all the tear-outs). What I wanted, or more to the point, needed (for my sanity), was an ‘organised, attractive home’ with labels that were less what you’d find in flat-pack instruction manual, but instead more in keeping with the design of their surrounding decor, even so far as to say ‘pretty’…

The bathroom was my first project.  I had, almost overnight, become ‘bothered’ by the colour clash of the brands sat on the end of the bath tub – all the different logos and labels were ‘shouting at me’ all vying for attention, whilst all I wanted was to have a relaxing soak.  Turning my attention to other areas of the house, I realised that I was surrounded by commercial branding and company 'waffle' on every food container, beauty product and alike.  I realised I could turn these functional, dull objects into something much more appealing and cohesive to our home environment.

And there you have it, or should I say, here you have it.  My website. My take on “functional just got beautiful”.

As you peruse this website, I hope you find something you like.  And if you don’t, allow me to source or create it for you…something just for you. Unique. Bespoke.  Mel x
